Avoid Foreclosure: Resources Available for Homeowners Behind on Payments

Due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, many homeowners have fallen behind on their mortgage payments over the course of the last year. Thanks to the national moratorium on foreclosures and evictions, homeowners who have fallen behind were able to avoid eviction and foreclosure proceedings. That moratorium – issued in connection with the declaration of the COVID-19 National Emergency – has been extended and is now scheduled to end on July 31, 2021.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has created a COVID-19 Resources for Homeowners website to help homeowners who have fallen behind in their payments to prevent the loss of their home. Resources include:

· How to request mortgage relief (forbearance)

· FHA’s COVID-19 forbearance

· Foreclosure and eviction moratoriums

· Be aware of scams

· Additional resources for homeowners

ATTENTION: Homeowners with FHA-Insured Loans

All homeowners with loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) can ask for mortgage forbearance without any penalty. Mortgage forbearance IS NOT mortgage forgiveness. It means that you must repay any reduced or paused payments in the future. In most cases, repayment can occur over time or when you refinance or sell your home.
