In April 2004, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors announced the Preservation Initiative for Fairfax County. This initiative includes a variety of tools to increase the amount of affordable housing that is preserved within the county. Among the items also included in the initiative are the Affordable Housing Preservation Forum, which was held in early June, and convened the development community, large property owners, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, state and local political leadership and others committed to the preservation of affordable housing to discuss the issue; and the Affordable Housing Preservation Action Committee.
The Committee, which was appointed by the Board in August 2004 includes local, state and national leaders in the fight to address the lack of affordable housing. The Committee will be tasked with assessing the best practices in affordable housing, assessing the ideas generated from the Affordable Housing Preservation Forum, promoting collaboration between the private sector, non-profit organizations and the county government in the interest of affordable housing preservation and developing a set of recommendations which would result in the preservation of 1,000 affordable housing units over the next three years. They will present a report of their findings and recommendations to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in six months.
