Fairfax
County Releases Analysis of Affordable Housing Programs, Funding Sources
Report Details Incomes Served, Budgeted Funding for FY 2007

At the request of the Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) has developed a report on the county’s affordable housing programs and funding sources.  The report, “Analysis and Matrix of Fairfax County Affordable Housing Programs and Funding Sources”, includes an overview of the incomes served by Fiscal Year 2007 funds, and a matrix detailing all of the county’s major affordable housing programs, the incomes they serve, and the funding for each program in FY 2007.  The report also includes a section detailing the county’s affordable housing funds, the types of activities they support, and the incomes they serve.  The report was delivered to the Board on June 14, 2007, and subsequently presented to the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee at its meeting on June 22, 2007.

Highlights of the report include:

  • Of the $106,596,029 available in FY 2007 for affordable housing programs, $53,701,094 – or 50 percent – went to programs with average incomes served of 30 percent of the area median income (AMI) or below.
  • Of the 1,372 units preserved (as of the date of the report) through the Board’s Affordable Housing Preservation Initiative, 961 units, or 70 percent of the units are affordable at 60 of the AMI and below.  Of these 961 units, nearly 400 units, or 30 percent of the total units preserved, are affordable to households earning 50 percent of the AMI.
  • Programs with average incomes served below 30 percent of AMI include: Public Housing (21 percent AMI), Housing Choice Voucher (formerly Section 8; 20 percent AMI); Fairfax County Rental Program – Senior Housing Programs (Assisted living – 15 percent AMI; Independent living – 27 percent AMI).
